Classifying such apps as “inane,” the article went on to describe Booze Mail as a “classic example” of the genre. Well, USA Today, this means war. Expect to see a round of Prune Juices in your inbox any minute now!

Wednesday
This month, MoMA premiered the exhibit Panoramas of the Moving Image: Mechanical Slides and Dissolving Views from Nineteenth-Century Magic Lantern Shows. This installation by self-taught artist Ernie Gehr uses 87 original slides with painted or printed images on glass which became popular in the 1870s as early motion pictures, known as Magic Lantern shows. The slides come from Gehr’s personal collection as well as that of David Francis, a collector and expert of early cinema. Have yourself a different kind of movie night with this one, and know that you can eat popcorn authentically since it’s been around for thousands of years.

The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library have a sale for you, it’s their annual Big Book Sale. This five-day event happens every fall and more than 10,000 book lovers browse hundreds of thousands of books at the Festival Pavilion at Fort Mason. We are talking rows upon rows of books here people. Forget Super Saver Shipping this week and go leaf through some books the old-fashioned way. Need a bookmark?

Do you like to be the first one on the scene of anything interesting? Then the inaugural Swerve Festival from Fuel TV is gonna be just your thing. It’s celebrating innovative music, arts and film and it’s not a typical Hollywood event. In fact, it’s not even in Hollywood; it’s in Los Feliz. Opening night features Surfwise, a documentary about the lives of the Paskowitz family, who lived in camper vans and surfed mostly with their nine children. Don’t have a lot of extra cash? No worries, entry is free and there are actually live music and activities that don’t require tickets once you’re inside. Your happy vibes will fit right in at the organic cafe.

Hey it’s almost October and that means a few things: Pumpkins and Hay! Portland, OR’s Pumpkin Patch has been going strong for 40 years and combines the best of both worlds with pumpkin-picking hay rides. Rumor has it Renkoo’s Troutgirl hearts corn mazes and there are regular and haunted varieties to get lost in here. Boo!

Torrey Pines is a gorgeous bluff in La Jolla that is home to world-class hang gliding and paragliding. You can go watch or brave the skies yourself with Torrey Pines Gliderport. Ninety percent of newcomers to the sport opt for a tandem paraglide; we want to hear from the 10 percent that go for it on their own! Kids as young as 5 and as old as 90 hit the harness and learn from instructors in up to nine languages. So age, physical ability or communication issues are out as excuses. Say hi to the seagulls for us while you’re up there.
